Hi! I’m Edie from MI and this is my first DENSI! I’m new on the LC so I jumped in head first and volunteered to head up the daily DEN Blog recap since I’m part of the Blogging & Social Media group! Today’s recap will be pretty short since we had an easy day (but I’m still beat)! The DENSI started with checking in, which in itself was a treat! I didn’t make it to the front door without meeting someone new! After checking into our rooms, we headed over for dinner at the Davis Center which was great, and not just for the food (but this mum-to-be won’t complain about a meal)! It was a whirlwind of introductions, hugs, and the DEN finger! It’s almost like a little cult into which I’m being welcomed with open arms! After dinner, we started with some unconference planning. This was a new idea for me, but I am SO excited to jump right in tomorrow; the only problem is that I don’t know how I’m going to choose what to do! There were so many great ideas presented, like Minecraft, smartphone photography, digital portfolios, Google extensions, and so much more! To top it all off, I got to meet the DEN gnome! All in all, it was a great day at the PreCon, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds!
9 Days Until We Leave!!!
Now that I'm done with my summer courses, all I can think about is DENSI 2013! I wasn't thrilled about having 2 intense 8-week classes right at the end of the school year, but now I am!!! I started packing my bags a few days ago and can't wait to get on the road! We're planning to leave on July 10th and spend the majority of the day driving to Ottawa, where we'll spend the night. The next day, we'll explore Ottawa, before heading on to a quick tour of Montreal. We'll then head to Burlington for the night. On Friday morning, we'll probably see a few sights, including Ben and Jerry's (inviting a pregnant lady to within miles of the ice cream center of the world - well played DEN, well played) before getting Donny settled into his campsite and before I get checked in to the conference.
I have also been doing my homework! I've been playing around with Board Builder, so hopefully I can share some of my experience with that at the conference. For two assignments for CEP 800, I was asked to evaluate and create a lesson plan centered around a tech tool. I choose Board Builder, since it is the newest tool I could think of and one that I haven't played with much, and really enjoyed using it in conjunction with the Science Techbook! Hopefully I learned enough to help some other teachers get started with it in their classes. I've also checked out the new Streaming Plus, which looks awesome! I love how it is all tied in with standards! SO COOL!
I've got my costume and gift (mostly) ready and should be getting my new digital video camera & green screen tools in the mail today (thank you PTO) which I'll be bringing to VT in hopes of learning more about green screen stuff and flipping! Other than that, I'm having a hard time deciding how much tech is too much to pack. We're driving, so space isn't an issue, I just don't want to look crazy. So far, I'm planning on bringing the digital video camera, my digital still camera, my laptop, my Nook tablet, possibly my Nexus tablet (if it gets here in time - it had to be repaired), my Iphone, and possibly my husband's iPad (I saw there were a few sessions specific to iPads). That seems like a lot to me, but I guess it kind of is a "tech" conference. I've also been obsessively checking the schedule, trying to decide which sessions sound the most relevant and interesting to me - it is a HARD choice! I'm really interested in this "unconference" business, too. I've never been a part of something like that, so I'm excited to see how that goes!
I'm also going to be bringing a bunch of postcards from my hometown. I'm hoping to have teachers write in their addresses so that when school starts I can have my class send some letters out to other DEN classrooms! It sounds like we will have a busy schedule, so I'm hoping I have time to snag the addresses! :)
Physically, I'm feeling good and have lots of energy - I'm hoping that continues for the next few weeks as I near the end of my 2nd trimester! My biggest problem right now is that most of my shirts are getting too short to cover my bump, but I can deal with that! I'm hoping my official DENSI will be long enough - I don't want to expose everyone my blinding white bump!
